SITE URL: roddh.com

The site serves as the central portfolio for Rodd Halstead (RoddH), a generative artist and software architect who bridges the gap between the "First Wave" of AI (Symbolics/LISP) and the modern era of Generative Design.

Key Themes:

  • The Physics of Coding: The portfolio showcases art that is not merely "drawn" but grown from mathematical axioms. It moves beyond standard "fractal art" (often characterized by garish color cycling) into architectural, organic, and physicalized forms.

  • Tool Mastery: Demonstrates a deep command of generative engines including Structure Synth, Mandelbulb 3D, Fragmentarium, Incendia, and Sunflow.

  • Visual Style:

    • Lighting: Strong use of Global Illumination and Ambient Occlusion (reminiscent of his architectural background and 3DVIA work) to give mathematical objects a sense of scale and material reality (bone, gold, marble).

    • Geometry: A focus on Kaleidoscopic Iterated Function Systems (KIFS) and recursive structures that mimic biological growth without the "messiness" of biology.

  • Legacy: Features work that has been highlighted on prestigious curation sites like But Does It Float, often alongside or predating the work of tool creators like Tom Beddard.

Artist Bio: Rodd Halstead (RoddH)

Rodd Halstead (b. 1957, Honolulu, HI) is a generative artist, systems architect, and the self-described "Lazy Zen Surfer."

A pioneer of the "Physics of Coding," Halstead’s artistic practice is rooted in a 40-year career that spans the entire history of modern computing. His journey began in the labs of Harvard Medical School, where he pioneered computer vision techniques to quantify biological systems, before moving to Symbolics in 1985, the epicenter of the first AI revolution.

Philosophy:

Rejecting the "messy probability" of biological science ($p < 0.05$), Halstead seeks the Binary Truth (1 or 0) of pure logic. His art explores the hidden structures of reality through Fractal Geometry and Generative Grammars. He treats the canvas not as a surface to be painted, but as a space where recursive logic is executed.

Career Highlights:

  • The Architect: A Harvard Magna Cum Laude graduate and MIT PhD dropout who replaced 50-person data teams with single nights of high-leverage coding at Lotus and Siebel Systems.

  • The Artist: A prolific creator on Flickr and DeviantArt under the alias RoddH, known for mastering tools like Structure Synth and Mandelbulb 3D to create "unreal things" that merge the precision of code with the organic beauty of nature.

  • The Mentor: Currently serving as a Fractional CTO and "Ultimate AI Evangelist," proving that the oldest code (LISP/Logic) is the ancestor of the newest (LLMs).

Residence:

He lives and works in the US, balancing 6-week high-intensity coding sprints with long stretches of "The Ride"—time dedicated to surfing, family, and the exploration of infinite geometry
